A macular pucker, also known as an epiretinal membrane, refers to fibrous scar tissue that grows over the surface of the central retina (i.e., macula) causing the macular architecture to wrinkle and become distorted. Symptoms may vary, however patients classically present with blurred and distorted central vision. When the macular pucker is visually significant, treatment involves vitrectomy surgery with membrane peeling to remove this scar tissue from the macular surface.
